A 4K picture has four times the pixels of Full HD, so it needs a bigger, steadier flow of data to arrive without pauses.

The figures from the main sources are close to each other:

Uswitch’s UK streaming guide gives minimum speeds per device of 3 Mbps for standard definition, 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.

Netflix’s own recommended speeds page lists 3 Mbps for HD, 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K Ultra HD.

Uswitch also reports that Netflix suggests 25 Mbps per device for Ultra HD and that Amazon Prime Video may need up to 25 Mbps for 4K films.

The gap between 15 and 25 Mbps is not a contradiction. A service quotes the speed at which its video will normally play. A broadband guide quotes a speed that leaves a margin, because real connections fluctuate. When you are choosing a package, work from the larger number.

Why the requirement changes from service to service

Two 4K streams are rarely the same size. Each service compresses its video differently, and the content itself matters: a slow drama compresses well, while fast sport with a lot of motion needs more data to stay sharp. HDR adds further detail and increases demand.

Platforms that rely on user uploads vary even more. Uswitch reports YouTube’s 4K minimum as 20 Mbps per device and explains that the real requirement depends on what the uploader provided. A clip uploaded at modest quality will not need what a professionally encoded one does.

So treat any single figure as a planning guide, not a promise. If you want certainty, test with the real content you watch.

Quick reference by picture quality

Picture quality

Typical minimum per screen

Planning figure

Standard definition

3 Mbps

3 Mbps

HD (720p)

5 Mbps

5 Mbps

4K Ultra HD

15 to 25 Mbps

25 Mbps

The minimums come from the Uswitch and Netflix pages above. The planning figure is the one we suggest you size a connection around.

How much data does 4K streaming use?

Bandwidth is speed. Data is the total amount transferred. The two are linked by simple arithmetic: divide Mbps by 8 to get megabytes per second.

A 15 Mbps stream is about 1.9 MB per second, or roughly 6.75 GB per hour.

A 25 Mbps stream is about 3.1 MB per second, or roughly 11 GB per hour.

These are our own calculations from the bitrates, and a real stream varies as it goes. They show why data limits matter. An evening film of two and a half hours can easily pass 15 GB. If your plan has a monthly allowance, 4K will find it quickly. The FCC’s consumer guide to home broadband lists data limits as one of the things to weigh alongside speed, noting that caps can constrain sustained use. Most UK home broadband is unlimited, but mobile broadband and some satellite or fixed-wireless packages are not, so check your own terms.

Working out your household’s total

The per-screen figure is where most people stop, and it is where most buffering complaints begin. Uswitch warns that platform minimums are for one device and do not account for other use in the home. Simultaneous streaming, video calls and gaming all need more. The FCC makes the same point: a single-activity estimate is not enough when several people or devices share the network, and a household may need a faster service.

Here is a simple method.

Count peak 4K screens. How many 4K streams could run at the same moment? Be honest about the evening, not the average day.

Multiply by 25 Mbps. That is your streaming load.

Add everything else. Allow roughly 5 to 10 Mbps for each video call, a few Mbps for each person browsing, and more for large game or software downloads.

Add a margin. Keep 20 to 30 per cent spare, because your real speed will not match the advertised figure.

The call and browsing allowances are our rule-of-thumb estimates, not published standards. They are deliberately generous so the result errs on the safe side.

Worked examples

Household

Peak use

Calculation

Sensible target

One person, one 4K TV

1 × 4K

25 Mbps + browsing 5 Mbps = 30 Mbps

50 Mbps or more

Couple, TV plus a laptop on a call

1 × 4K + 1 call

25 + 10 + 5 = 40 Mbps

75 Mbps or more

Family of four, two 4K TVs and two phones

2 × 4K + extras

50 + 15 = 65 Mbps

100 Mbps or more

Shared house, three 4K streams, gaming and calls

3 × 4K + extras

75 + 30 = 105 Mbps

150 to 200 Mbps

These targets include the margin from step four. The advertised speed matters less than the speed that reaches your TV. For multi-device streaming, Uswitch recommends fibre broadband at the minimum and says full fibre is preferable where it is available. Fibre also tends to hold its speed better at peak times than an older copper-based line.

Do you need gigabit?

For 4K alone, almost certainly not. Ofcom’s broadband and mobile coverage checker lets you enter a postcode and see whether standard, superfast and ultrafast services are available at your address. Use it to see what you could buy, then choose the package that covers your table above rather than the biggest number on offer.

Why 4K can buffer when your speed looks fine

A speed test showing 200 Mbps does not guarantee a smooth picture. The FCC advises looking beyond download speed to upload speed, latency and data limits. Latency affects real-time applications, and caps affect sustained use. For streaming, these are the usual culprits:

Wi-Fi, not broadband. A TV in a back bedroom, two walls from the router, may receive a fraction of the speed your line delivers. This is the single most common cause.

Evening congestion. Everyone on your street is streaming between 7 and 10 pm. A line that tests well at lunchtime can slow down in the evening.

Competing devices. Cloud backups, console updates and someone else’s video call all take a share.

An old router. Routers several years old may not handle many devices well or may lack modern Wi-Fi standards.

A slow TV processor. Some older smart TVs struggle to decode 4K smoothly even with a perfect connection.

Throttling or caps. Some providers limit speeds or data at certain times. If a lower quality setting fixes the problem, this may be why, as Netflix’s own help page notes.

Simple fixes in order of effect

Connect the TV or streaming box to the router with an Ethernet cable. It removes Wi-Fi from the equation.

If a cable is not practical, move the router into the open, ideally closer to the TV, and use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band for the screen.

Restart the router and the streaming device. It is dull advice, and it works more often than you would expect.

Pause large downloads and backups during viewing.

Consider a mesh Wi-Fi system if your home is large or has thick walls.

How to check your connection before you commit

The best test uses the device that will stream, in the place it will be used, at the hour you will watch.

Run a speed test on the device itself. Netflix suggests using Fast.com in a browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Many smart TVs have a network test in their settings menu.

Test at different times. Try once in the morning and once between 7 and 10 pm. The evening result is the one that matters.

Test beside the router, then at the TV. The difference tells you whether Wi-Fi is the problem.

Compare with your table. If the evening result at the TV clears your household target, you are fine for 4K.

Check your package. Look at your provider’s terms for data caps and for what speed it commits to at peak times.

The Ofcom checker above is also useful here: it shows what services are available at your postcode, so you can tell whether a faster package exists before you call your provider.

Perspective: what we see at Buyiptvfor4k

We offer IPTV in 4K, HD and FHD, with more than 30,000 live channels and more than 140,000 films and series on demand, so bandwidth is the first thing we talk about with new viewers. Our view is that most buffering complaints are blamed on the service when they begin inside the home. A picture that freezes at the weekend, when the whole street is online, usually points to Wi-Fi or evening congestion before it points to anything else.

So we suggest this order of work. First, put the main TV on a cable if you can. Second, size your package using the per-screen and household method above. Third, use a service built to cope with real-world conditions: we design ours with antifreezing technology and reliable servers, because even a good connection has a bad moment. If you are unsure whether your set-up is ready, our support team is available 24/7, and we give free installation help, including to people who have never set up IPTV before.

And be wary of 4K promises that ignore your own network. No service can deliver a smooth 25 Mbps stream into a house that only receives 10 Mbps in the living room.

— User

Choosing a plan once your connection is ready

Once your test results clear your target, the next step is simple. Our IPTV subscription is available as a 1-month plan at £14 per month, a 3-month plan at £29 per quarter, or a 12-month plan at £55 per year, all listed on our main page. It works on all common devices and comes with a satisfaction guarantee and free installation assistance.

If you want to test your connection with us first, the monthly plan is the lowest-commitment way to do it. Netflix quotes 15 Mbps as its recommended minimum for 4K, but UK guidance such as Uswitch’s uses 25 Mbps, which leaves a safer margin. Add more for every other device in use at the same time.

Is 50 Mbps enough for 4K streaming?

For one or two screens with light other use, yes. At 25 Mbps per stream, two simultaneous 4K screens already use all 50 Mbps, leaving nothing for calls or browsing. If your household regularly runs more than one 4K stream, aim for 100 Mbps or more.

Does 4K need a special type of broadband?

No special type is required, but fibre is the better choice. Uswitch recommends at least fibre for multi-device streaming and prefers full fibre where it is offered. Check what is available at your address with Ofcom’s checker.

Why does my 4K stream buffer when my speed test is fast?

The test probably measured something other than your viewing conditions. Weak Wi-Fi at the TV, evening congestion, other devices on the network or a data limit can each cause buffering. Test on the streaming device at peak hours, and use a cable where you can.

Sources

What broadband speed do I need for streaming?
